Getting Back to Work Upgrading Homes and Buildings

June 25, 2020 | Energy

It is difficult to imagine any business not affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the hardest hit has been those that require working in customers’ homes and businesses. The building performance industry has lost nearly 620,500 jobs during this time. The building performance industry includes professionals and stakeholders working to increase the comfort, energy efficiency, and safety of buildings, and it includes utilities, program implementors, home assessors, and contractors.

As states and the nation open up, it is becoming possible for contractors to return to work in homes and businesses. This work is vital to providing occupants more control over their homes and can positively impact indoor environmental quality, including air quality, which is top-of-mind for all of us. Industry leaders are working to create evidence-based guidance on safely returning to work with protocols and procedures that best protect both occupants and workers.

The Building Performance Association (BPA) is a membership-based industry association working to advance a thriving industry delivering improved energy efficiency, health, and environmental performance of buildings. The BPA provides an accurate Back to Work Resource Guide, including training resources, guidance documents, and additional information. Drawn from multiple locations and reviewed by industry experts, these resources cover:

  • Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE),
  • Health Screening,
  • Remote Work,
  • Physical Distancing,
  • Cleaning and Disinfecting, and
  • Additional Considerations.

While virtual energy assessments, customer targeting, and ongoing engagement using sophisticated analytic solutions can be used to assess customer needs and onboard them to utility programs, contractors must enter homes to make the upgrades. Apogee continues enabling success by providing its Energy Advisor online energy audit and Personalized Video Messaging that educates customers about where their energy dollars are going, both empowering consumers to use energy wisely. These solutions drive critical outcomes such as energy and demand savings, as well as increasing customer satisfaction by driving program adoption and customer engagement with advanced rates, electric vehicles, internet-of-things, and other emerging technologies.
